The Division of Natural Resource Management (NRM), ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, organised an awareness-cum-demonstration programme on “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3Rs) and Income Generation from Waste” at Calicut village, South Andaman, under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.

Jaisankar, Head, Division of NRM, ICAR-CIARI, with specific emphasis on the productive utilisation of household and agricultural wastes and their conversion into useful farm inputs and potential income-generating products.

The participants were informed about their conversion into compost, vermicompost, enriched organic manure and other useful products that can be recycled within the farm.
The scientists explained how recycling farm biomass can help reduce expenditure on external inputs, improve soil organic matter and nutrient recycling, minimise waste accumulation and enhance overall resource-use efficiency. Special emphasis was placed on identifying waste materials available locally and selecting simple processing methods that can be adopted by individual farmers or small groups without requiring major investment.
The programme also discussed opportunities for small-scale enterprise and supplementary income generation through production and sale of compost, vermicompost and other value-added products prepared from locally available biodegradable resources. Farmers were encouraged to view agricultural residues not merely as waste, but as a potential economic resource.
