Awareness Programme on Sustainable Farming Practices under “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” at Car Nicobar

As part of the ongoing “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” campaign, a team from ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), led by Dr. Santosh Kumar, Senior Scientist-cum-Head, along with Subject Matter Specialists, conducted an awareness programme on 1st June 2026 at Car Nicobar. The programme aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance farmers’ understanding of soil and land conservation measures.

During the interaction, the team highlighted the importance of protecting agricultural land through the adoption of minimum tillage practices. Farmers were informed that reducing excessive soil disturbance helps maintain soil structure, conserve moisture, minimize erosion, and improve long-term soil health. The scientists also emphasized the role of organic manure in maintaining and enhancing soil fertility. The use of farmyard manure, compost, and other organic inputs was recommended to improve soil organic matter, nutrient availability, and overall crop productivity.

The programme provided a platform for farmers to discuss local agricultural challenges and seek technical guidance from the experts. Practical recommendations were shared on sustainable farming methods suitable for the island ecosystem, with a focus on preserving soil resources for future generations.

A total of 25 farmers actively participated in the programme and expressed keen interest in adopting the recommended practices. The initiative contributed to raising awareness about environmentally friendly and climate-resilient agricultural techniques, thereby supporting the sustainable development of farming communities in Car Nicobar.
